Carers

Our practice is committed to supporting carers. For many carers, their GP is often the first person they turn to when things start to become difficult or they feel unable to cope. It is always a good idea to tell your GP or practice nurse if you are a carer, even if you are coping with your caring role, because this will help your GP to make sure you are given any extra support you might need now or in the future. Our practice works in conjunction with the North Ayrshire Carers Centre who will provide information, advice and support on numerous issues. For further information please contact the Practice on (01294) 832523.

Are you caring for someone with a terminal illness?

If you're looking after a family member or friend who has been diagnosed with a progressive or terminal illness, it is crucial that support is available to you as quickly as possible.

  • New regulations under the Carers (Scotland) Act 2016 mean set timescales are now in place that North Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership and NHS Ayrshire & Arran must follow to ensure that this happens
  • Once we have identified you as a carer, we will offer you an Adult Carer Support Plan or Young Carer Statement within two days
  • If you accept our offer of support, our first conversation with you will take place within five days. We will then help you to complete your support plan or statement within five days of this initial conversation. You can also request a suitable date or time that better meets your circumstances.
What can we do for you?

We will talk to you about your caring circumstances, consider the types and levels of support you need and what you are entitled to, as well as your ability or willingness to continue caring for your family member or friend.

For example, you might need help with maximising your income, practical or emotional support, equipment or adaptations for your home, or you might need a break from caring to look after your own health and well-being.

Once any eligible support is put in place, we will set a date to review the support you are receiving and make any adjustments where necessary.
